As a cancer survivor, hydration becomes critical. When hydrated the urinary tract remains healthy, toxins and bacteria are removed from the body. If they are not eliminated you are at an increased risk of developing infections. Since the immune system may already be compromised any risk of infection is dangerous. You may already be experiencing fatigue, dehydration will exacerbate your fatigue. Has your treatment caused dry mouth or mouth sores? Consuming adequate fluids can decrease the dry mouth and decrease the risk of infections from the mouth sours. Once the dry mouth and sours have lessened, your appetite will come back, your energy levels increase and, with the additional nutrients, your body can concentration on healing.
Water is not the only thing you'll want to consumer. You can get your fluids from fruit juices, smoothies and popsicles. And, if your cancer nutritionist says it's ok, moderate amounts of coffee and tea aid in promoting hydration. So, don't wait until you're thirsty, get something to drink right now!
